Here comes the sun!

And with it, our new summer menu! We've got a delicious selection of sandwiches, salads and toasties that are perfect for lunch over the next couple of months.

Try our Summer Sandwich Special: chicken in a lemon pesto mayonnaise with a hint of garlic, with crunchy lettuce, in your choice of seeded multigrain or white sandwich bread. At just £3.60, this is one not to be missed!

Or why not treat yourself to a refreshing salad? Each large plate of fresh salad leaves is served with homemade coleslaw and your choice of grated cheese, ham, lemon pesto chicken, crunchy cheese or Waldorf salad. Salads are available at £4.75 each.

Our other freshly-made sandwiches will continue to run, too – you can eat in for £3.10 or enjoy on the go for just £2.70. Each is served on your choice of seeded multigrain or white sandwich loaf: choose from Crunchy Cheese, BLT, ham and English mustard mayonnaise, or mature cheese with apple and ale chutney or Branston pickle. Sandwiches are served with tortilla chips and a salad garnish.

And finally, our fresh, hot toasties are perfect if you want a bit more heat this summer! Toasties are served on white or wholegrain bread with tortilla chips, salad garnish, and a serving of coleslaw. For £3.60 (or £3.10 to take away), choose from ham & mature cheese, creamy French brie and cranberry sauce, spicy chorizo and Mexicana cheese, or Applewood smoked cheese and red onion.

We also have a range of refreshing drinks, including iced lemonade, creamy milkshakes and fruity smoothies. And we stock Granby’s 'We Made' Limeade and Raspberry Lemonade, both of which are made to make your mouth water.

As well as the food and drink, be sure to look out for our competitions over the summer. Pop in between 10am-3pm on weekdays from Monday 27 July to Friday 31 July and colour in a bunting triangle – there will be prizes for our favourites! We'll put all the bunting together and use them to decorate the play area outside, so get ready to unleash your creativity.

Come in and make your summer delicious, colourful and creative at Coffee Box!

Capturing the tides of local life

The local Coastal Currents Arts Festival is at the heart of the Hastings & St Leonards calendar. It's a fantastic three weeks celebrating the incredible creativity of our town's renowned artistic community, attracting thousands of visitors and tourists. This year, for the first time, King's Church Hastings will be taking part, and at Coffee Box we're pleased to be hosting their exhibition.

During Coastal Currents, the exhibition will be open to everyone. So whether you're a photographer, painter, illustrator or fine artist – beginner or advanced – King's would love to showcase some of your work at Coffee Box.

The theme of the exhibition is Tides, which will capture the ebb and flow of life in Hastings & 1066 Country. Tides will be a collaborative exhibition of photographic and creative works from artists living in the area, touching on the seasons, the memories, the hopes and the realities of life in our town. This is a brilliant opportunity to participate in this festival that is such a key part of our town.

The brief is simple: produce a single photo or a collection of portraits or scenic photographs, representing your view of the tides of life in Hastings & 1066 Country. For each image or for your collection as a whole, please provide a brief story, memory or hope, explaining your chosen theme. Please bear in mind that some photos will be printed at A3 for the exhibition, so please use the highest resolution settings on your camera and submit uncompressed versions of your photos (RAW if possible). Hand your work in to the Hastings Centre Reception on a CD or memory stick, or email by Friday 31 July.

If your work is selected, it will be displayed in Coffee Box throughout Coastal Currents, including at the King's launch event on Saturday 5 September (more info coming soon).

King's would love to see your work and showcase some of the outstanding talent from the local community. Other Coastal Current exhibitions will be taking place across Hastings' public spaces between 28 August and 13 September, too, promising a colourful exhibition of creative arts, so note the dates and don't miss this great event in our town.

Coming up at Coffee Box

What's happening at Coffee Box this month? Here's what you need to know about our upcoming events for all the family.

The half-term break is next week – if you're not sure where to go with the kids, we'd love to welcome you to 'half-term play' here from 10am to 12:30pm on Monday 16, Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 February. The Hastings Centre's multi-purpose room, opposite Coffee Box, will be open for play, with ride-on toys and other activities. Please note that this is suitable for under 5s only, and parental supervision is required.

For older children, our outdoor play space is lots of fun too! Please note that it can be muddy at this time of year, but remember: "There's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes!"

We're also looking forward to our next family film event, which takes place on Saturday 21 February. Thank you to all of our customers who voted on the Coffee Box Facebook page: the results have been counted and we'll be showing Disney's Brave (PG). Entry is free, doors open at 5pm, and there'll be cinema snacks and treats available. Our licensed bar will be open for adults, too. We kindly remind customers that only food and drink purchased at Coffee Box can be consumed on the premises, and that children are the responsibility of the adult they arrive with.

If you're visiting us for lunch one day, why not try our home-made Italian tomato soup? At only £3.80, each serving comes with a choice of crusty bread or seeded toast and real butter – delicious! For more tasty lunches, snacks and treats, pop in to see the menu or ask a member of staff.

Finally, don't forget that Coffee Box is available for parties and private hire. If you're interested, call Stuart on 01424 753322 or email

Whatever brings you here, we look forward to seeing you!

Festive family fun...

It was great to have so many of you join us last Saturday for a brilliant, family-friendly film afternoon, our free screening of Elf.

Over 100 people came along to Coffee Box and it was a pleasure to serve hot drinks, movie-themed snacks including popcorn and chocolate, and Christmas treats during the night. We loved seeing you get into the Christmas spirit, with elf costumes all round, and the film wasn't just a hit with the kids, either, as our licensed bar gave the adults something special too.

There was a great buzz as we enjoyed the film with guests from across the town, and as the lights were turned up at the end of the night, many said how much they enjoyed themselves. If you want to enjoy more events like this, our next movie afternoon is at 4pm on Saturday 17 January, when we'll be showing Mr Popper's Penguins, a great family flick starring Jim Carrey. Save the date for a great opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends and family in our lively coffee shop.

If you're looking for a more traditional Christmas event, this Sunday (14 December), King's Church presents their carol service, The Greatest Gift, held at the Hastings Centre, with entry through Coffee Box. This is always a hugely popular event (the afternoon service is fully booked!) and we'd love to see you at the 7pm service. You can book your free ticket here.

Finally, don't forget that we are open until 3pm on Tuesday 23 December, so why not come in and make the most of our Christmas goodies until then? We'll be opening again at 10am on Monday 5 January, welcoming in the new year with our menus of hot and cold drinks, meals and snacks that everyone can enjoy.

Suspended Coffees

Coffee Box is proud to join many others around the world in offering suspended coffees. Monay can't buy love, but it can buy someone in need a coffee, cold drink or even lunch.

Purchase anything from the Coffee Box menu in advance for someone in need and the item will be "suspended" and saved for someone who would really benefit from your generousity.

The Mayor came to buy the first suspended coffee.

New play area equipment!

Who’d expect a coffee shop to have three Hastings boats as their outdoor play area? Well now we’ve added two swings in the Coffee Box field as well, and the slide’s on its way.

Even before we officially opened the swings today, there was a queue of toddlers eager to take their turn.

We bet they’re going to love the slide when it’s installed next week!

Sizzling sausages and 'grilling' the MP!

Around 130 people from the local business community enjoyed sizzling sausage sandwiches and an opportunity to 'grill' the local MP at this morning's Chamber of Commerce breakfast in Coffee Box at the Hastings Centre.

After breakfast, which also included Danish pastries, fruit and Greek yoghurt, Hastings & Rye MP Amber Rudd spoke to the group in a packed Coffee Box, and was then questioned about the pier, street drinkers, women in business, apprenticeships and infrastructure.

Retired local doctor John Geater then spoke during the community slot about Prime, which seeks to train medical professions around the world in whole-person healthcare.

Jonathan Dolding, head of the Chamber of Commerce, said: "It was great to be in the recently opened Coffee Box at the Hastings Centre, seeing it full of local business people networking over a tasty breakfast, and having the opportunity to question our local MP on a range of business-related subjects."

Hastings Centre manager Stuart Clark said: "It's fantastic to see the local business community here. We're all committed to seeing Hastings and the surrounding areas prosper, and these breakfasts give us a great opportunity to share ideas and gain contacts."

Serving up some Wimbledon winners

Tension was high in a packed Coffee Box yesterday afternoon as people piled in to watch the historic Wimbledon men's final. The majority were cheering on Briton Andy Murray in the thrilling three set match.

Murray was certainly serving up some winners, and we were too! Delicious strawberries and cream milkshakes, refreshing Pimm's and huge slices of cake went down a treat throughout the afternoon.

Pop in during the week (Monday to Friday, 10am-3pm) to try out Coffee Box for yourself. The home-made cakes are temptingly tasty, and our coffees, milkshakes, smoothies and sandwiches are made-to-order each day. Not to mention that we expect the outdoor play area and patio to be sun-soaked all week now summer has arrived!

Kids' play area looking ship-shape

The Coffee Box play area out on the back field is really starting to look ship-shape. We're looking forward to some sunny days this summer when adults can sit out on the patio, enjoying a delicious coffee or a scrumptious smoothie, admiring the view of a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty while children play out in the sun! The fort and boats are being built by award-winning local social enterprise Hastings & Bexhill Wood Recycling Project.
